Since 2016, Google has pioneered the shift toward quantum-resistant encryption protocols. Our recent technical publication demonstrates that forthcoming quantum systems could compromise elliptic-curve cryptographic protections for digital currencies using substantially fewer quantum components than earlier projections. We aim to increase understanding of this challenge and present the digital currency sector with actionable strategies to enhance protection mechanisms, including migrating distributed ledgers to quantum-proof cryptographic standards.
